#hiringfriday 11.17.23 edition: GDBHT 2023
Happy #hiringfriday after a few days in sunny Phoenix. Congratulations to Solome Tibebu and her team on a wonderful in-person Behavioral Health Tech conference. I spent a very rewarding 48 hours catching up with old friends and former colleagues, making new connections, and nerding out on all things BH. I cannot wait until the next one!
In reflecting on the conference, I wanted to share three thoughts.
Behavioral Health has a new Superbowl… and the health plans are Taylor Swift
Eight years ago, Behavioral Health topics were lucky to get a panel at most broader events. Now, there is so much content it fills 3.5 days in two parallel formats (live and virtual). It was, as a friend put it, “the Superbowl” of BH.
And since every Superbowl needs a Taylor Swift, this week it was the payors. While there were a few investors and employers, folks I talked to were most excited to meet with health plans. And the health plans were centerstage sharing their strategies and needs. It was a robust and encouraging dialogue.
Technology is exciting, but BH stills needs the human element
It was nice to be at an event where I did not fill my “Gen AI” bingo card every panel. Instead, most panels touched on how technology - be it predictive analytics, matching algorithms, clinical decision support or something else - integrated into human-first care. I also think this reflects the growing diversity of the type, severity, and context of the conditions we’re all addressing - and the recognition that different populations may require a different balance between human touch and automation.
We’re talking about harder things - and making an impact
There were multiple panels on topics that can still feel stigmatized - especially substance use treatment and suicide prevention. My sense is that is no longer only about access, but about access to quality care for everyone, regardless of severity. I’m excited about the potential here - especially since Brightside is leaning in with its’ Crisis Care Program.
If you attended the event in-person or joined the virtual programming, would love to hear your thoughts!
